| Bio: | Character: Maes Hughes Alias: Pride Series/Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist Original or Alternate: AU Age: Real age unknown, but several hundred years at the very least (canonically and appears 29 or 30) Gender: Male Species: Homunculus (canonically and appears human) Sexuality: Heterosexual and happily married Appearance: Maes is fairly tall and, though not exceptionally well-built, is no beanstalk. He keeps his black hair cut short, except for his bangs, which he keeps several inches long. Most of his bangs are slicked back over his forehead, forming almost a flattened crown. However, one strand still manages to stick out into a long cowlick. He also has a bit of black stubble growing on his chin. His somewhat blueish-purple eyes always hide behind a pair of glasses that he wears for distances (and besides, he likes how they look). When not at work, Maes prefers to wear plain, casual, comfortable clothing. However, when at work, he wears the typical Lieutenant Colonel uniform. Like all officers in the Amestrian military, his uniform is a somewhat dark blue, with white trim along the collar, sleeve cuffs, edges, and pockets of the jacket, as well as a couple of random yellow ropes that wrap around his right arm. His left shoulder bears the insignia of the Lieutenant Colonel – four stripes, with two stars between the middle two. He’s in his military uniform when he’s brought to Econtra, though it’s slightly torn. Like all homunculi, Pride has the mark of the Ouroboros on his body. His mark is on his back, centered just between his shoulder blades and placed a couple inches below his neck. It’s easily hidden by his clothing, and in fact he refuses to go out in public without his back fully covered. When he arrives, Maes also has a large, bloody stain on his right shoulder where Lust’s nails dug into him. The blood is only a few hours old, but the wound has completely healed already. Likewise, he has a bloody bullet wound in his chest, but it’s fully healed as well, leaving only the stains on his jacket behind. An interesting thing of note: anyone who can feel the presence of a being’s soul would notice that Maes does not seem to have just one, like most people, but several working in harmony. This is because of the Philosopher’s Stone that forms his core, which is made of human souls. Personality: Living up to his homunculus title of Pride, Maes is quite prideful – especially when it comes to his wife and daughter. In fact, pretty much everything in his life revolves, in one way or another, around the two of them. When either of them does anything even slightly of note, Maes is guaranteed to show up with an ecstatic rant and a photograph for anyone who wants to experience them – and even if they don’t want to, he shows them anyway. He is also extremely overprotective of them, even going so far as to pull out his gun to warn the neighborhood boys not to try anything bad with Elysia when they only want to play a harmless game. In general, Maes is good-natured, cheerful, and a little bit fun-loving at times. He even brings this to his job, preferring to refer to his family rather than the matter at hand. He also does not like to get into the actual fray of the battle, preferring instead to hide on the side until needed or the battle is over. He’s also a bit on the insubordinate side at times, again due to his homunculus nature. He is Pride, after all, and therefore narcissism dictates that no one is superior. Of course, Maes has a serious side to him as well, and when it’s time to let it out, he lets it out. This serious side can, if the situation calls for it, include frustration and mildly sarcastic comments. Usually, when dealing with the other homunculi, he doesn’t let any side other than this show up, and he often includes a bit of narcissism. Abilities/Strengths: As a Lieutenant Colonel in the Investigations Department of the Amestrian military, Maes is trained to be an excellent observer and gatherer of information. This, as well as his above-average (though perhaps not genius) intelligence, allows him to come to conclusions that others would never catch. Also, he is trained for combat and very proficient in the use of throwing knives. Being a homunculus, he also has several other traits that benefit him physically. He cannot be killed unless the Philosopher’s Stone at his core is destroyed, and he is able to physically regenerate himself with the Stone’s power. Also, his unique power is to turn himself invisible, to put it simply, to the average human eye, so that only those who he wants to be able to see him would be able to see him. People who are psychic would be able to see through this, and people who can feel spiritual energies would be able to tell that he was there, however. Weapons: As a member of the Amestris military, he usually carries a hand gun on his belt. Also, he wields a set of small triangular throwing knives which he carries in a small pouch, also on his belt. He prefers the knives over the gun though. He is also proficient in the usage of cameras and photographs, when it comes to using them as blackmail material. Weaknesses: Gracia and Elysia. He would never hurt them or anyone who took one of their forms, ever, even if his or someone else’s life depended on it, and depending on the situation, that can be used to others’ advantage. Heck, it’s the reason why Envy was able to surprise him. Also, contrary to popular belief, he isn’t immortal. If he’s killed enough times, his Philosopher’s Stone will be used up and he won’t be able to regenerate. And if he were to be broken on a Catherine Wheel, he would be unable to regenerate (as that is the punishment for pride). History: This version of Maes Hughes comes from an alternate version of the manga timeline. Naturally, this canon differs from its anime counterpart in the way the Ishbal war occurred, as well as the nature and identity of the homunculi. How this universe differs from the manga canon is simple: in this world, Maes Hughes is not human, but a homunculus. Specifically, the homunculus known as Pride. (Most of the possibility of which, canonically, was shot down in chapter 70.) Some time after the fall of Xerxes, the being known as Father created Pride from a fragment of the Philosopher’s Stone, a legendary alchemic substance that was said to be able to bypass the laws of equivalency in alchemy. In turn, he created other homunculi as well – Lust, Greed, Envy, Sloth, Gluttony, and even Wrath after Greed left. The last in that list was formed in order to lead the military state known as Amestris, for the purposes of creating another, huge Philosopher’s Stone. However, though Wrath, known to the humans as King Bradley, was the Fuhrer, or head of the Amestrian military, he was, naturally, unable to catch all of the insubordination that might occur in the lower ranks. So, it was agreed that one of the other homunculi would join from the bottom and work their way up to the middle, to watch what the not-so-high-ups were thinking. That job fell to Pride, no matter how much he didn’t want it. The others were either too busy or did not appear quite as natural, after all. So he joined as Private Maes Hughes, the son of a farming family from the eastern outskirts of Amestris. He hid his homunculus identity from everyone, including the other homunculi, who had never seen his true, humanoid form before. Perhaps things might have turned out differently if he hadn’t been befriended by an up and coming State Alchemist, one Roy Mustang, and by a lovely lady from Central who went by the name of Gracia. However, the two of them managed to open up his slightly cold exterior a bit, and the two of them soon became his best friends. After the Ishbal war, Maes ended up marrying Gracia, being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and being hired by the Investigations Department – the military had seen that that was where his skills lay, after all. It was eventually determined that Maes was sterile, which came as no surprise to him (though he feigned it), since a homunculus cannot reproduce. However, Gracia wanted a child, so the two of them adopted a little girl who they named Elysia. Life went on as usual for a few years. Maes worked to solve various crimes and gather information, and he would then report any insubordination that he learned of to Father and the rest of the homunculi. Then, however, Edward and Alphonse Elric, the two young alchemists that Pride knew had been chosen to be human sacrifices, stumbled upon the Fifth Laboratory and found out about the existence of the homunculi. The homunculi couldn’t exactly kill the Elrics, as they were too important for their plans. However, they couldn’t just let them free. Therefore, without asking his opinion on the matter, the rest of them decided to sacrifice another person who knew instead, in order to make sure that they would shut up. Yes, that’s right. They decided to target Maes Hughes. Unfortunate that they didn’t realize that Maes was their brother, Pride, no? The night Elysia turned three years old, Maes, unfortunately, had to work late after the party. He was thinking over some things, and he suddenly realized something – Father needed five human sacrifices, and there were three alchemists that Maes knew of that were potentially capable of opening the Gate. He, of course, knew that the Elrics were definitely targets, but why wouldn’t they target Roy? And yet they hadn’t bothered to tell him, the bastards! He was just about to leave the library and contact Roy to warn him – after all, regardless of species, Maes still considered him a friend – when Lust attacked him. Although she wounded his shoulder, he made it out after stabbing her in the forehead with one of his knives. He then ran to the office telephone, only to not call on that one and instead run out to a phone booth nearby – after all, the military line could be tapped and, therefore, listened in on by the higher-ups. Once he got to the phone booth, he began a call to Roy, but the slowness of the operator caused Envy to be able to show up. Though transformed into Second Lieutenant Maria Ross, the other homunculus didn’t fool Pride for a moment, mostly because of a missing birth mark. However, before he could deal enough damage to Envy to allow himself enough time to warn Roy, the other homunculus transformed into the very image of his wife, and while he was hesitating, shot him. When Maes came to, he decided immediately to go complain to Father about the entire set-up, because it meant that he wouldn’t be able to return to his human family.
